Gustav Nyquist scored 3:44 into overtime as the Detroit Red Wings got their first win of the season, defeating the host Panthers 4-3 on Saturday night in Sunrise, Fla.
The Wings, who had started the season 0-5-2, also got goals from Dennis Cholowski, Dylan Larkin and former Panthers winger Thomas Vanek.
Wings goalie Jimmy Howard earned the win, making 34 saves.
Florida got goals from Keith Yandle, Nick Bjugstad and Mike Hoffman, whose score with 1:16 left in the third sent the game to overtime.
Panthers goalie Michael Hutchinson, who came off the bench Friday to lead Florida to its first win of the season at the reigning Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals, could not hold a 2-0 lead. He stopped 27 shots.
Florida opened the scoring 7:34 into the first period. Evgenii Dadonov got loose on an odd-man rush, feeding Yandle on his left side. Yandle's shot beat Howard, glove-side.
Detroit appeared to tie the score with 10:29 left in the first period on a deflection by Michael Rasmussen. But Panthers coach Bob Boughner challenged, and video replay wiped out the goal as it was ruled that Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader interfered with Hutchinson in the crease.
The Panthers increased their lead to 2-0 with 16:10 gone in the first, as Aleksander Barkov won a faceoff and got the puck cleanly back to Bjugstad, who beat Howard with a high wrist shot.
Detroit tied the score with two power-play goals within 18 seconds in the second. Cholowski scored as Detroit had a two-man advantage following a high-sticking penalty on Bogdan Kiselevich and a hooking call on Mike Matheson, just back from a two-game suspension.
Then, with a one-man advantage, Vanek scored after taking a setup pass from Frans Nielsen.
Less than two minutes later, Detroit took a 3-2 lead as Larkin scored off a perfect give-and-go play with Darren Helm.
Florida had a chance to tie the score with 18:11 left in the third period. Barkov was awarded a penalty shot after he got free for a breakaway and was hooked from behind by Cholowski.
But Barkov twice lost control of the puck on the penalty shot and offered just a weak attempt on goal that was stopped.
