Troy Terry scored the lone goal in the shootout, and goalie John Gibson made 19 saves through overtime and was perfect in the shootout as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in their home opener Monday night.
The Ducks celebrated the 25th anniversary of their inaugural game by winning for the third time in as many outings to start the season. The Red Wings are winless through three games to start the season for the first time since 1991-92, although two of their losses were in extra time.
Detroit's Tyler Bertuzzi opened the scoring at 11:06 of the first period to kick off the back-and-forth tilt. After Bertuzzi gained the puck at the side of the net, he worked his way to the front of the cage and buried the shot.
Anaheim's Hampus Lindholm tied the game at 10:57 of the second period. Lindholm gathered the puck at his left point and eluded one check before skating down to the dot and ripping a shot just inside the far post.
Darren Helm restored Detroit's lead at 14:56 of the middle frame. Helm elected to shoot on an odd-man rush, only to see that offering blocked, but he buried his second chance.
Again the Ducks tied the game, though, with Jakob Silfverberg scoring at the 9:29 mark of the third period. Silfverberg was on the spot for a rebound tally, which already gives him five points on the season.
Anaheim rookie Max Comtois, a 2017 second-round draft pick, collected an assist on the goal, giving him points in all three games to start the season and his pro career.
Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard made 25 saves, including a couple of highlight-reel stops in overtime, and collected an assist for a team that was without four veteran defensemen: Mike Green, Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson and Trevor Daley.
The Ducks were without forwards Ryan Getzlaf, Ondrej Kase, Patrick Eaves, Ryan Kesler and Corey Perry due to injuries.
