Artemi Panarin scored at the 2:11 mark in overtime to give the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the season opener for both teams on Thursday.
Panarin skated in from the blue line to the right circle and fired the puck to the far side past Jimmy Howard. Nick Foligno and Markus Nutivaara assisted on the game-winner.
Cam Atkinson and Josh Anderson also scored for the Blue Jackets, while Panarin, Anthony Duclair, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Brandon Dubinsky contributed assists. Columbus has defeated Detroit seven straight times.
Dennis Cholowski scored in his NHL debut for the Wings, while Dylan Larkin and Gustav Nyquist each supplied two assists. Tyler Bertuzzi had the other Detroit goal.
Howard stopped 36 shots, twice as many as winning goalkeeper Joonas Korpisalo.
With veteran defensemen Jonathan Ericsson, Niklas Kronwall and Mike Green sidelined by injuries, Detroit got off to a slow start.
The Blue Jackets outshot the Wings 11-5 and scored the only goal in the opening period. Columbus had three power plays during those 20 minutes and converted on one of them.
Atkinson fired a shot from the right circle through Howard's five-hole 5:12 into the game. Dubois and Panarin were credited with the assists.
Detroit came back to tie at 2-all by the end of the second period despite getting outshot 11-9.
Cholowski got a big assist from Larkin for his breakthrough goal to tie the score at 1-1. Larkin drew a defender and shoveled a backhanded pass from behind the goal line to Cholowski, who snuck in all alone in front of the net. His one-timer came at 7:46 of the second period.
A turnover in the Columbus zone allowed the Blue Jackets to regain the lead. A two-on-one became a three-on-one with Anderson coming out of the penalty box during that rush. Anderson wound up scoring in front with assists from Dubinsky and Duclair at the 13:06 mark.
A power-play goal for the Wings tied it later in the period. Larkin once again set it up, sliding a pass from the right circle to Bertuzzi, who apparently hit it with his leg and knuckled it past Korpisalo.
