Senators 4, Canadiens 2: Craig Anderson made 48 saves as visiting Ottawa scored three goals in the third period to rally past second-seeded Montreal in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round series.

Defenseman Marc Methot gave the seventh-seeded Senators a 3-2 lead 5:20 into the session - and just 1:53 after rookie Jakob Silfverberg tied the game. Guillaume Latendresse added an insurance goal and defenseman Erik Karlsson opened the scoring in the first period.

Ottawa defenseman Eric Gryba hit Montreal's Lars Eller in the head at the Canadiens' blue line 19 seconds after Rene Bourque’s goal in the second period. Eller, who lay motionless on the ice with blood pooling around his face, left the game conscious on a stretcher before being taken to a local hospital, where he was to spend the night. He suffered a concussion, broken nose and dental and facial fractures.

Gryba was assessed a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct. He is scheduled to have a disciplinary hearing with the league on Friday.

Rookie Brendan Gallagher also scored as part of a 27-shot second period for the Northeast Division champion Canadiens, who will host Game 2 on Friday. Carey Price stopped 27 shots but saw his career postseason record drop to 8-16.

Silfverberg slapped a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that went between Price’s pads. Methot continued the momentum by firing a point shot after a feed from captain Daniel Alfredsson, with Milan Michalek screening Price.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Playing in his fourth game since missing 10 weeks with a torn Achilles tendon, Karlsson deflected C Kyle Turris’ pass past Price with 2:35 remaining in the first period. Bourque scored on Montreal’s 34th shot, sneaking out from behind the net and lifting a backhander over Anderson’s shoulder 59 seconds before Gallagher jammed a goal-line feed from C Tomas Plekanec past the netminder during a power play. ... Methot, Karlsson and Silfverberg all finished with a goal and an assist. … Anderson’s career-high save performance in the playoffs came on April 18, 2010 as a member of the Colorado Avalanche. He posted a 51-save shutout against the San Jose Sharks in a game that ended 51 seconds into overtime.
