Hurricanes 4, Bruins 2: Defenseman Joe Corvo burned his former team by scoring a power-play goal to snap a tie 9:36 into the third period as host Carolina posted just its second win in 16 outings (2-13-1) and denied Boston's bid to clinch a postseason berth.
Jiri Tlusty capped his two-goal effort with an empty-net tally and Jeff Skinner also scored. Justin Peters turned aside 28 shots for the slumping Hurricanes, who ended a seven-game losing skid by winning for the first time in April.
Tyler Seguin scored for the third straight game and Milan Lucic also tallied for the Bruins, who have dropped two in a row and remained one point behind Montreal in the Northeast Division. The Canadiens suffered a 5-1 loss to Original Six-rival Toronto on Saturday.
With Chris Kelly serving a kneeing penalty, Corvo accepted fellow defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron's feed and handcuffed Tuukka Rask (34 saves) with a one-timer from the upper edge of the left faceoff circle. The goal was the sixth in 34 contests for Corvo, who scored four in 75 games with Boston in 2011-12.
Tlusty gave Carolina a 2-1 lead with 5:56 remaining in the second period after converting captain Eric Staal's backhanded feed on the doorstep. Seguin answered nearly four minutes later after taking defenseman Andrew Ference's lead pass before beating Peters under the crossbar on a breakaway.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tlusty has a career-high 19 goals. ... Peters rebounded from a dismal effort in Monday's 6-2 loss in Boston. Peters lost sight of the puck on both goals he allowed in that contest before hitting the showers at 7:58 of the first period. ... Lucic opened the scoring 6:07 into the first period after D Matt Bartkowski's shot caromed off his skate and past Peters. Bartkowski was originally credited with his first career NHL goal, but officials changed the decision midway through the second. ... Bruins RW Jaromir Jagr had an assist to extend his point streak to four games, but C Gregory Campbell saw his streak end at three contests.
