Oilers 3, Blue Jackets 1: Devan Dubnyk made 39 saves, including 14 in the third period, as visiting Edmonton snapped a five-game winless streak.
Magnus Paajarvi scored his first goal of the season short-handed with 3:10 remaining in the third to lift the Oilers, who were outshot 40-14. Sam Gagner set up Paajarvi’s winner and added an empty-netter, while Ales Hemsky scored his fifth of the season.
R.J. Umberger ended Dubnyk’s shutout bid midway through the third period, but Columbus fell to 1-3-1 during its six-game homestand.
Hemsky chipped the rebound from Taylor Hall's chance past a sprawling Sergei Bobrovsky with 6:02 left in the first period to give Edmonton the lead, which held until Umberger tied it on a great individual effort. Umberger circled around from the right-wing boards and past two defenders, carried the puck into the slot and snapped a shot past Dubnyk for his first goal of the season.
With Ryan Smyth in the penalty box late in the game for slashing Tim Erixon, Paajarvi skated into the slot on a short-handed rush and one-timed a pass from Gagner. who had stolen the puck at the Oilers' blue line. Columbus finished 0-for-7 on the power play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Oilers C Jordan Eberle appeared to score midway through the second period, but the goal was waved off because he appeared to make contact with his stick above the crossbar. Video replays were inconclusive. … Blue Jackets C Derick Brassard saw his four-game point streak come to an end. … Paajarvi has four goals and seven points in seven career games against the Blue Jackets.
