Tommy DeVito threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns before exiting the field in the fourth quarter in Syracuse's 41-3 non-conference win over Holy Cross on Saturday at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
DeVito went to the locker room with an undisclosed injury after completing 19 of 31 pass attempts with an interception for the Orange (3-2). Senior backup Clayton Welch replaced him.
Taj Harris had six receptions for 107 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, tight end Luke Benson had a 70-yard touchdown on his only reception of the game.
Holy Cross (1-3) was held to only 138 yards of total offense. Connor Degenhardt completed 13 of 28 passes for 104 yards while the running game accounted for only 18 yards on 32 carries.
Syracuse's nation-leading streak of 17 games with an interception was snapped. The Orange defense was still stifling with five sacks and they did not allow Holy Cross to record a first down in the second half until 5:30 remained in the game.
DeVito had more passing yards (110) than Holy Cross had overall (102) in the first half when the Orange built a 24-3 lead.
DeVito directed Syracuse to a touchdown on the Orange's opening possession of the game, going 63 yards on seven plays, culminating with his 14-yard pass to Aaron Hackett.
Syracuse extended its lead to 14-0 with 8:25 left in the first quarter after Holy Cross turned the ball over on a punt return. Aaron Bolinsky caused Jon Jon Roberts to fumble the ball and Tyrell Richards recovered the ball for Syracuse at the Holy Cross 17.
On the next play, DeVito connected with Trishton Jackson for the touchdown.
Syracuse took a 24-3 lead with 10:09 left in the second quarter when Abdul Adams turned a fourth-and-4 situation into a 19-yard scoring run.
The Orange's offense stalled the next four possessions, extending into the second half, each ending with a punt. Syracuse was 5 of 16 on third-down conversions.
Syracuse did not score again until Andre Szmyt's 26-yard field goal with 5:41 left in the third quarter. The Orange failed to reach the end zone going only 19 yards in seven plays after Sean Riley had a 34-yard punt return to the Holy Cross 27.
The Orange offense finally awoke on DeVito's 47-yard touchdown pass to Harris with 1:15 left in the third quarter to increase the lead to 34-3.
