Arizona State marched 75 yards for the winning touchdown, a 1-yard run by Eno Benjamin, with 50 seconds to play, giving the Sun Devils a 10-7 victory over No. 18 Michigan State on Saturday in East Lansing, Mich.
The drive was highlighted by Arizona State's conversion on fourth-and-13, leading to the winning score. Freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels dropped back to pass but took off running with a wide-open field in front of him, picking up 15. Four plays later, the Sun Devils were in the end zone.
Michigan State (2-1) appeared to tie the game in the final seconds on a 42-yard field goal from junior kicker Matt Coghlin, but the Spartans were flagged for too many men on the field. His 47-yarder as time expired went wide left.
The loss kept Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio from becoming the winningest coach in program history.
Arizona State (3-0) gained only 216 total yards, but the Sun Devils got the plays when they needed them. Benjamin gained only 38 yards rushing, but Daniels threw for 140 and ran for 37.
Fifth-year senior quarterback Brian Lewerke threw for 291 yards, while fifth-year senior Darrell Stewart had nine catches for 121 yards for the Spartans, who gained 404 yards but managed only seven points after scoring 51 against Western Michigan last week. Redshirt freshman running back Elijah Collins gained 72 yards on 19 carries, including a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The sloppiness was clear early in the first half, as Michigan State committed four penalties and converted just four of nine third downs. Lewerke's first-quarter fumble stalled one drive, while Coghlin, who entered the game perfect on seven field-goal attempts this season, missed wide right for 47 yards and 31 yards. The second miss came after Michigan State was called for delay of game, taking away a 26-yarder that would have tied the game at 3 before halftime.
Arizona State, meanwhile, wasn't rattled by the big stage, even with a true freshman starting at quarterback and an inexperienced offensive line. The Sun Devils managed only 104 total yards before the break, but took advantage of Coghlin's first miss, marching 48 yards on 10 plays to take a 3-0 lead with 3:40 left in the second quarter on a 41-yard field goal from sophomore Christian Zendejas.
