James Stefanou kicked a 34-yard field goal in overtime, and Nebraska punter Isaac Armstrong missed a 48-yard attempt in the extra period, as the Colorado Buffaloes rallied in the second half to beat the No. 25 Cornhuskers 34-31 in Boulder, Colo., on Saturday.
Senior quarterback Steven Montez was 28 for 41 for 375 yards passing with two touchdowns and an interception for the Buffaloes (2-0), who scored all of their points after the two-minute mark of the third quarter.
Jaren Mangham rushed for 44 yards and two scores, K.D. Nixon had six catches for 148 yards and a touchdown, and Tony Brown caught five passes for 60 yards and a score for Colorado.
Nebraska sophomore quarterback Adrian Martinez connected on all nine of his pass attempts in the first half and finished 16 for 26 for 290 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 66 yards and two more scores, while Maurice Washington had four catches for 118 yards and one touchdown and added 77 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Colorado got the ball first in the overtime, gaining one first down before settling for Stefanou's second field goal of the game. On Nebraska's possession, Martinez was sacked on third-and-9, pushing the Cornhuskers back to the 31.
Armstrong, pressed into duty because of a hip flexor injury to Barret Pickering, hooked his 48-yard try sharply to the left.
The Cornhuskers (1-1) built a 17-0 halftime lead on Martinez's 65-yard touchdown pass to JD Spielman, a 5-yard scoring run by Martinez and a 26-yard field goal by Armstrong. Spielman finished with five receptions for 112 yards.
Colorado finally scored on Mangham's 11-yard run late in the third quarter, and Montez hit Nixon for a 96-yard TD on a flea-flicker early in the fourth to make it 17-14. Washington's 75-yard touchdown catch on Nebraska's next offensive play restored Nebraska's 10-point lead.
Colorado made it 24-21 on a five-play, 75-yard drive capped by Mangham's second TD. Martinez fumbled the ball away on the Nebraska 20 on the next Cornhuskers possession, and Stefanou kicked a 20-yard field goal to tie it with 8:30 remaining in the fourth.
Martinez's 6-yard scoring run on fourth-and-1 made it 31-24, but Montez's 26-yard pass to Brown with 46 seconds left in the fourth sent it to OT.
