The Texas-San Antonio defense squashed Baylor and Roadrunners quarterback Dalton Sturm made enough plays to lift his team to a 17-10 victory on Saturday night at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas.
Baylor kicker Connor Martin kicked a 20-yard field goal to make it a one-score game with 2:40 left in the fourth quarter. The Bears got the ball back with 2:08 remaining, but UTSA stopped Baylor's final drive at the Bears' 39-yard line.
UTSA linebacker Josaih Tauaefa wrapped up Baylor quarterback Anu Solomon on a fourth-and-10 play, forcing Solomon to throw a wobbly, incomplete pass. Tauaefa's play iced it for the Roadrunners (1-0).
UTSA held Baylor (0-2) to 274 yards total offense.
UTSA took a 14-7 lead when Sturm hit wide receiver Kerry Thomas Jr. for a 29-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the third quarter.
The Roadrunners added to the margin early in the fourth when kicker Victor Falcon nailed a 38-yard field goal to cap a seven-play, 55-yard drive. Falcon's kick gave UTSA a 10-point edge with 14:12 left.
Baylor deep snapper Ross Matiscik set up the Bears' first score when he recovered a fumble by UTSA punt returner Matt Guidry at the Roadrunners' 20-yard line.
The Bears needed just one play to score as Solomon threw a fade route to the right corner of the end zone and wide receiver Denzel Mims ran under it for the touchdown. Mims' score put Baylor ahead 7-0 with 8:33 left in the second quarter.
But UTSA responded immediately as Sturm led a 16-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that ate up most of the rest of the second quarter.
On third-and-goal from the Baylor 7, Sturm found wide receiver Josh Stewart for a touchdown to tie it at 7 with 27 seconds left until halftime.
The Roadrunners outgained Baylor 205-118 in total yards in the first half.
