Kyle Filipowski scored 22 points to lead Duke to a 68-64 victory over Notre Dame on Tuesday night in Durham, N.C.
Filipowski shot 9-of-16 from the floor and also had six rebounds, three assists and a block for the Blue Devils (18-8, 9-6 Atlantic Coast Conference). Filipowski's status coming into the game was in doubt after he had appeared to suffer an injury on the final play of regulation during Duke's loss on Saturday at Virginia, but the freshman big man played 31 minutes.
No other Duke player scored in double digits, but Jeremy Roach had nine points and three assists, and Dariq Whitehead tallied nine points and three rebounds.
It was the fourth straight loss for Notre Dame (10-16, 2-13). The Irish were powered by 25 points from Dane Goodwin, while Ven-Allen Lubin chipped in 10 points and six boards.
The game marked what will likely be the final trip for Mike Brey to Cameron Indoor Stadium as the head coach of the Irish. Brey, who spent eight seasons as a Duke assistant coach, has said he will step down at the end of the season. Longtime Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski was in attendance, marking his first game back at Cameron since retiring.
Notre Dame led by three points early on, but Duke closed the first half on a 9-4 run to take an eight-point advantage into intermission. The Blue Devils then opened the second half on an 11-5 run to take a 14-point lead, their largest of the night. Mark Mitchell scored five points for Duke during that stretch.
The Irish kept chipping away at the deficit, though. With just under three minutes to play, the Irish trailed by eight points, but then embarked on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 62-60 with 1:27 to play. Duke responded as a timely 3-pointer from Mitchell sealed the victory for the Blue Devils.
Duke had 16 assists on 25 made baskets. The Blue Devils scored 10 points off 10 Irish turnovers, while only allowing Notre Dame to score three points off Duke's cough-ups.
