Jahmir Young recorded 30 points and a game-high 11 rebounds as Maryland held off a second-half charge by No. 24 Ohio State in an 80-73 victory on Sunday in College Park, Md.
Hakim Hart and Donta Scott scored 12 points apiece, while Julian Reese and Don Carey each had 10 points as all five starters from Maryland (11-5, 2-3 Big Ten) hit double figures.
Reese added eight rebounds and Hart seven as the Terrapins won the battle of the boards 40-26. The Buckeyes were without top rebounder Zed Key, who sustained a shoulder injury Thursday in a loss to No. 1 Purdue.
Freshman Brice Sensabaugh matched his career high with 22 points to go with his seven rebounds as Ohio State (10-5, 2-2) lost its second straight game. Justice Sueing added 21 points for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State trailed 60-46 midway through the second half before staging a rally. The Buckeyes pulled to within three points on four occasions in the final seven minutes but got no closer.
Young helped wrap it up with a runner in the lane with 1:16 left that put the Terps up 74-68. Then, in the final 45 seconds, Carey and Scott each made two free throws.
It was a triumph of experience over youth as the Terps started three graduate students against the Buckeyes, who had three freshmen in the starting lineup.
One of those grad students, the 6-foot-1 Young, matched his career high in points and came within one of his career best in rebounds.
The Terps made 60.9 percent of their shots in the second half after missing 15 of their final 16 tries in the first half.
At the start of the second half, it was Ohio State's turn to go cold. Over the first 5:38, the Buckeyes missed all seven of their shots and committed five turnovers, paving the way for a 14-0 Maryland run.
Young opened and closed the spree with buckets in the paint. In between, Scott and Carey made 3-pointers as the Terps took a 48-39 lead it would not relinquish.
Maryland got the biggest lead of the first half when Scott hit a 3-pointer to make it 23-16. But Ohio State answered immediately with seven straight points, including a trey by Bruce Thornton which tied it.
