Gregory "GG" Jackson II scored 22 points and Meechie Johnson added four 3-pointers to help visiting South Carolina rally to a 74-71 overtime win over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Tied at 71, Johnson canned a deep 3-pointer to cap the scoring with 25 seconds remaining in overtime. Georgetown missed a pair of shots from beyond the arc on its ensuing possession.
The Gamecocks (4-4) made 10 3-pointers on a season-high 31 attempts. The Hoyas (4-5) went 3-for-18 from beyond the arc.
Georgetown led 37-26 at the break after holding Jackson without a point in the first half, but the freshman found his stroke in the second half as the Gamecocks stormed back and led by one with under a minute remaining.
Primo Spears rattled home a foul-line jumper with five seconds to play that gave Georgetown a 65-64 lead. Jay Heath was whistled for a flagrant foul on the ensuing inbounds pass that gave South Carolina two free throws and the ball.
Hayden Brown drained the first free throw but missed the second, giving the Gamecocks 3.8 seconds to produce a game-winning basket. Jackson's fadeaway jumper clanged off the rim and the teams went to the extra session knotted at 65-65.
Heath scored a team-leading 23 points and made all three of Georgetown's 3-pointers. Spears scored 18 points and Brandon Murray added 13.
Johnson and Brown had 17 and 16 points respectively for the Gamecocks.
The Hoyas feasted on 16 giveaways and held a commanding 23-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
Neither team orchestrated many crisp possessions throughout a first half riddled with errant passes, wild shots and loose balls.
The Gamecocks committed 10 turnovers against just seven assists in the first half and shot just 32.0 percent from the field, while the Hoyas made just 1 of 8 of their 3-point attempts.
Georgetown capitalized on those 10 miscues and held a 16-0 advantage in points off turnovers as South Carolina trailed at the half for the fourth straight game.
