Caleb Grill scored a season-best 16 points off the bench to lead No. 19 Iowa State to a 64-58 victory over host Creighton in a Big East/Big 12 matchup on Saturday night at Omaha, Neb.
Grill made all four of his 3-point attempts as the Cyclones (8-0) defeated Creighton for the seventh consecutive time. Izaiah Brockington scored all 12 of his points in the second half and collected seven rebounds for Iowa State, which halted a 25-game road losing streak.
Ryan Hawkins scored a season-high 25 points for the Bluejays (7-2). Ryan Nembhard added 10 points for Creighton, which committed a season-worst 21 turnovers.
Iowa State shot 41.2 percent from the field, including 7 of 14 from 3-point range. The Cyclones had 14 turnovers.
The Bluejays connected on 42.2 percent of their shots and were 6 of 19 from behind the arc.
Creighton pulled within 61-56 on two free throws by Nembhard with 40 seconds to play.
Tyrese Hunter split two free throws for the Cyclones with 19.1 seconds left, and Brockington made two with 9.7 seconds remaining as the Cyclones wrapped up their first road win since a 78-64 victory at Kansas State on Feb. 16, 2019.
The Cyclones received a 3-pointer from Grill, a three-point play by Aljaz Kunc and a trey from Tre Jackson during a 9-2 burst that saw them open up a 39-31 lead with 11:39 remaining.
But Creighton responded with 3-pointers from Rati Andronikashvili and Hawkins to move within two with 10:13 left.
Brockington scored the final four points of a 6-0 burst as Iowa State pushed the advantage to 45-37 with 8:24 left.
The Bluejays were within six with three minutes to go before Brockington buried another 3-pointer to give the Cyclones a 57-48 lead with 2:29 left.
The score was tied at 23 at halftime as Creighton had severe issues with turnovers (15), and Iowa State struggled with its shooting (33.3 percent).
The Bluejays committed 13 turnovers in the first 12:26 before ripping off 10 straight points. Hawkins hit consecutive 3-pointers to cap the run and give Creighton an 18-9 advantage with 4:49 remaining.
Iowa State later scored the final seven points of the half with Grill draining the tying 3-pointer with just over a second remaining.
