Teddy Allen finished with a season-high 23 points to lead Nebraska to a 76-69 win over South Dakota in a nonconference game Tuesday night at Lincoln, Neb.
Nebraska is 3-1 after losing its final 17 games that resulted in a 7-25 record in Fred Hoiberg's first season as head coach last year.
Allen, a former standout at West Virginia, scored 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field in the second half while his teammates produced 24 points, making 9 of 22 shots.
Trey McGowens finished with 13 points, Kobe Webster and Shamiel Stevenson each had 11 and Dalano Banton had 10 for Nebraska. Lat Mayen was the game's leading rebounder with 12.
South Dakota (0-3) was led by A.J. Plitzuweit's career-high 24 points, 15 coming in the second half. Stanley Umude had 14 of his 23 points after halftime and also pulled down 11 rebounds in the game.
A 12-2 run enabled Nebraska to pull away to a 60-45 lead with 8:36 left in the game. Webster made two 3-pointers and Banton converted two jump shots in that stretch.
South Dakota would not get closer than seven points the rest of the game.
In the first half, Allen was called for three fouls and the Cornhuskers shot 34.6 percent from the field while committing 10 turnovers.
The Cornhuskers still led 36-29 at halftime behind nine points from McGowens and seven each from Allen and Stevenson.
South Dakota, which went the last 4:56 of the half without a field goal, had nine points apiece from Plitzuweit and Umude.
Nebraska had nearly a five-minute stretch without a field goal in the first half, which enabled South Dakota to take a 16-12 lead with 11:01 left before the break.
The Cornhuskers scored the last five points of the half as the Coyotes missed their last seven shots.
Nebraska committed only five turnovers in the second half.
The Cornhuskers won the rebounding battle 46-38 and their bench outscored the Coyotes' 24-12.
