Wichita State used a 16-3 run midway through the second half to pull away from Oklahoma State 80-61, on Sunday afternoon in Stillwater, Okla.
The Shockers (8-1) led 44-35 with early in the second half. Wichita State then found a higher gear in the next nearly four minutes of play to gain a 60-38 lead with 13:45 remaining in regulation. The Cowboys (7-2) weren't able to respond to that surge and lost their second game of the season after falling to Georgetown on Wednesday.
Wichita State roared out of the starting gate, taking a 23-12 lead with 11:55 left in the first half. Oklahoma State rallied to trim that deficit to just five, at 34-29, with 5:14 left before halftime.
Then Wichita State's defense came to the forefront. The Shockers struggled on offense in the final five minutes of the first half, but because they held Oklahoma State to only two points in those same five minutes, the Shockers were able to take a 38-31 lead to the intermission. The two teams played on relatively even terms in the first few minutes of the second half, but then came the 16-3 run which ended the competitive phase of this game.
The Wichita State defense was excellent, limiting Oklahoma State to 38.5 percent shooting on 20 of 52 field goal attempts. The big difference in this game, more than just the Shockers' defense, was 3-point shooting. Wichita State hit 11 of 26 threes, whereas Oklahoma State was just 3 of 16 from long distance. Both teams were turnover-prone --18 for Oklahoma State, 17 for Wichita State.
Tyson Etienne led Wichita State with 19 points, boosted by 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Jaime Echenique and Erik Stevenson added 13 points, and Jamarius Burton dished out a game-high 11 assists.
Lindy Waters led Oklahoma State with 11 points. Cameron McGriff added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
