Nathan Bain raced down the court to score the winning layup at the buzzer, and Stephen F. Austin stunned top-ranked Duke 85-83 in overtime Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Bain's basket came off Duke's fifth turnover in the extra session and ended the Blue Devils' 150-game homecourt winning streak in nonconference games.
Duke became the third No. 1 team to lose this season, and the second one to do so on its homecourt.
The Blue Devils (6-1) scored only two points in overtime.
Bain came up with the ball after Duke's Matthew Hurt made a pass from around the baseline at the offensive end. Bain then drove to the other end uncontested and scored just in time.
Stephen F. Austin (5-1), which lost its previous game at Rutgers, was led by Kevon Harris' 26 points. Cameron Johnson added 16 points, Gavin Kensmil had 15, and Bain finished with 11 points.
In regulation, Duke's Tre Jones made two free throws with 29 seconds remaining before Kensmil answered with a hoop in the low post 10 seconds later. Duke's frantic attempt to go ahead failed at the buzzer.
Vernon Carey Jr. posted 20 points for Duke, with Jones notching 17 and Hurt and Cassius Stanley each supplying 15.
Stanley drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 2:18 left in the second half to send Duke back in front at 77-75. David Kachelries answered with a 3-pointer for the Lumberjacks.
Duke had two chances on its next possession courtesy of an offensive rebound. Then Carey's lay-in just before the shot clock expired gave Duke a lead at the 59-second mark.
Harris made one free throw with 47.2 seconds to play, tying the score again.
Duke outshoot Stephen F. Austin from the floor, 50 percent to 48.6 percent, from 3-point range, 5 of 15 to 2 of 10, and made 24 free throws to the visitors' 11. However, the Blue Devils missed 16 of 40 foul shots.
The Blue Devils were in their first game since returning from New York after winning two games last week to capture the 2K Empire Classic Benefitting Wounded Warrior Project.
This was the first meeting between the teams.
