Freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. scored a season-high 24 points as North Carolina State defeated Saint Joseph's 73-63 in the third-place game of the Paradise Jam on Monday night in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands.
Guard Torin Dorn's 19 points and guard Terry Henderson's 15 points gave the Wolfpack a boost, while junior forward Abdul-Malik Abu posted the 18th double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Smith, who scored 12 of N.C. State's first 25 points, went 9-for-10 on free throws in the game, which marked the first meeting between the teams in more than 35 years.
N.C. State (4-1) had a strong conclusion to the first half and then went on an 11-2 run to start the second half.
But a drought of more than four minutes without a field goal allowed the Hawks to close within 64-58 before Dorn's 3-pointer. That was Dorn's fifth 3 among six long-range attempts.
Guard Shavar Newkirk led Saint Joseph's (3-2) with 23 points, shooting 10-for-18 from the field. Forward Charlie Brown added 14 points.
N.C. State's lead was 34-30 at halftime, aided by 7-for-11 shooting on 3-pointers.
The Wolfpack used a 22-4 run to escape an early deficit and claim a 31-24 edge.
N.C. State won despite not receiving a point from its reserves, while the Hawks had 14 points from their reserves.
N.C. State recovered from a 112-94 loss to Creighton a night earlier. The Wolfpack had better defensive results, holding Saint Joseph's to 32.9 percent (24-for-73) shooting from the field. That included a 1-for-15 outing from Hawks guard Lamarr Kimble.
