Kansas State converted 9 of 10 shots from the free-throw line in the final minute to hold off Texas 65-62 on Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum in the Big 12 Conference opener for both squads.

Texas trailed by 13 with 7:23 remaining in the game, but a late flurry, including seven straight field goals (two three-pointers) got the Longhorns to within three points. They could get no closer because of the Wildcats' success from the line.

Kansas State (12-1, 1-0 Big 12), which had lost its last two conference openers and last two home games against Texas, was led by Dean Wade with 18 points. The Wildcats also got 16 points from Wesley Iwundu and 15 from Kamau Stokes. K-State got all 65 points from their starters.

Texas (6-7, 0-1) was led by Jarrett Allen with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Shaquille Cleare and Kerwin Roach Jr. each added 10 points.

The Longhorns scored the first six points of the game and led 11-4 at the first media timeout. Kansas State couldn't find the rim from outside, missing its first five three-point attempts (they were 1 of 9 in the half). But a 9-0 run before the next media timeout gave the Wildcats the two-point lead.

By the time the Longhorns scored again on two free throws by Cleare, 7:27 had ticked off the clock and the Wildcats had scored 15 straight points. The Longhorns went 8:20 without connecting from the field.

After extending the lead to eight points, the Wildcats went 7:34 without scoring a field goal to allow the Longhorns back into the game.

The Wildcats led 32-29 at the half, behind nine points by Iwundu, eight by Stokes and seven by Wade. They hit only 8 of 21 (38.1 percent) from the field, but connected on 15 of 19 from the line. The Longhorns were led by Cleare with 10 points and Allen with eight points. They hit only 33 percent (11 of 33) from the field in the half.
