Providence 74, No. 24 Georgetown 71: Carson Desrosiers scored eight of his 14 points in the final six minutes as the visiting Friars overcame a 13-point deficit to stun the Hoyas.
LaDontae Henton and Ben Bentil added 16 points apiece for Providence (17-6, 7-3 Big East), which swept the regular-season series. Kris Dunn collected 12 points, nine assists and six steals as the Friars won for the fourth time in five games.
D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 21 points to lead Georgetown (15-7, 7-4), which dropped its second straight home game. Joshua Smith, Isaac Copeland and Tre Campbell each added 10 points for the Hoyas.
Desrosiers scored Providence’s final six points in a 10-1 burst to help bring the Friars back from a 13-point deficit to a 68-66 lead with under four minutes to play. Desrosiers was called for a technical foul that allowed Georgetown to take back the lead on Smith-Rivera’s free throws, but Desrosiers buried two at the line with 32 seconds left to put Providence back in front and Dunn grabbed his final steal with 10 seconds remaining to help close it out.
The Friars used a 9-0 run to grab a 35-34 lead late in the first half before the Hoyas scored seven of the final 10 points to take a 41-38 advantage into the break. Providence went ahead 44-43 on Dunn’s basket with just over 17 minutes remaining before Georgetown used a 13-0 run capped by Peak’s three-point play to regain control.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Friars shot 53.5 percent from the field, led by Desrosiers’ 5-of-6 effort. … Henton made his 123rd career start, breaking Providence’s all-time record. … Smith-Rivera went 5-of-10 from 3-point range and has hit multiple 3-pointers in nine straight contests.
