St. John’s 83, Providence 70: Phil Greene IV and D’Angelo Harrison scored 20 points apiece as the visiting Red Storm defeated the Friars to snap a three-game losing streak in Big East play.
Sir’Dominic Pointer recorded 18 points and eight rebounds for St. John’s (12-4, 1-3 Big East), which made 8-of-13 from 3-point range in the first half and 10-of-17 overall. Rysheed Jordan added 17 points for the Red Storm, who had a 17-point lead cut to three in the second half before taking control.
LaDontae Henton led the way with 22 points for Providence (13-5, 3-2), which lost for only the second time in its last nine contests. Kris Dunn contributed 17 points, 10 assists and seven boards while Tyler Harris scored 12 and Ben Bentil grabbed 10 rebounds for the Friars, who went 14-of-25 at the free-throw line.
Greene drained two 3-pointers while Jordan hit another as St John’s ran off 11 straight for a 35-24 advantage and led by as many as 15 before settling for a 42-30 edge at intermission. The Red Storm led by 17 early in the second half, but Providence ran off 16 of the next 18, capped by seven straight points from Harris.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Greene and Harrison, followed by a basket from Pointer during an 8-1 run, helped St. John’s re-build a 61-51 lead with 6:17 to go. Dunn’s basket cut the deficit to 65-57 before Greene made two consecutive driving layups and the Red Storm was not challenged again.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Greene became the 49th player in St. John’s history to reach 1,000 career points. The senior has 1,010. … Henton moved past Providence great Ernie DiGregorio (1,760) into ninth place on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,772 and Harrison took over third from Felipe Lopez (1,927) all time at St. John’s with 1,930. … Red Storm G Jamal Branch, who is averaging 5.1 points, missed the game due to a cut on his hand that required several stitches.
