Stanford 71, Denver 58: Dwight Powell scored a career-high 29 points and the Cardinal won their fifth straight game against the host Pioneers.
Stanford (6-3) started on a 21-6 run and never trailed against the Pioneers (1-5), who lost their fourth straight contest. Chasson Randle added nine points for the Cardinal, who shot 53.3 percent and held a 38-22 edge in the paint.
Royce O'Neale paced the Pioneers with 17 points and Cam Griffin, Jalen Love and Chris Udofia each added 10 points. Denver, which trailed by 16 at halftime, cut the lead to 10 on Udofia’s 3-pointer with 12:44 remaining before fading down the stretch.
Powell was 10-for-13 shooting and 9-for-11 from the foul line. Both teams struggled from 3-point range, with Stanford shooting 18.2 percent (2 of 11) and Denver making just four of its 16 attempts.
The game was Stanford’s last before a 13-day break for final exams. The Cardinal are playing only five games during the month of December.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanford junior G Aaron Bright scored three points after missing four straight games with a sprained ankle. … The Cardinal improved to 48-15 against non-conference opponents under coach Johnny Dawkins. …Denver’s lone senior, Chase Hallam, had six points on 2-for-5 shooting.
