Freshman swingman Patrick Heckmann scored a career-high 32 points to carry Boston College to a 66-62 overtime victory over California-Riverside on Friday in the 76 Classic at Anaheim, Calif.
Junior transfer Matthew Humphrey added 11 points for the Eagles (2-3), who will play in the fifth-place game on Sunday against either New Mexico or Washington State.
Heckmann, who has been battling a sprained ankle over the past two weeks, hit 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. He also matched a team high with five rebounds.
Humphrey’s 3-pointer with 2:10 left capped a 9-0 run and put Boston College on top, 54-48. The Highlanders battled back in the final minute, pulling even at 56-56 when Kareem Nitoto and Harrison Gaines drained back-to-back 3-pointers.
The Eagles grabbed the lead in overtime on back-to-back layups and Heckmann sealed it with four free throws.
Phil Marin collected 22 points and seven rebounds for UC Riverside (1-4), which has yet to beat a Division I opponent.
