Cleveland Melvin scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half as DePaul used a late surge to get past Texas Tech, 76-70, at the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
In a game that featured 15 lead changes, the Blue Demons (3-1) were clinging to a slim one-point edge before Jeremiah Kelly was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 4:18 to go. Kelly made all three free throws to begin a 10-2 DePaul run that made it 71-62 with 1:59 remaining. The Red Raiders (3-2) scored the next six points to get within three before running out of steam.
Melvin hit 10 of 19 shots off the bench, making four straight at one point midway through the second half to help DePaul break a 50-50 tie and take the lead for good. Brandon Young added 24 points for the Blue Demons.
Ty Nurse scored 19 points to lead Texas Tech, while Jordan Tolbert added 16 points and nine rebounds. The two teams committed a combined 33 turnovers.
