Jordan Tolbert tied a career-high with 27 points, helping Texas Tech overcome a second-half deficit and pull away for a 74-58 victory over visiting Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday night.
Tolbert, a 6-foot-7 freshman, hit 10-of-12 field goals and scored 15 of his points after halftime.
Javarez Willis added 16 points for the Red Raiders (6-5), who shot a scorching 60 percent from the field to move to 5-0 at United Spirit Arena.
Stephon Carter had 17 points off the bench to lead Cal State Bakersfield (6-7), an independent program already playing its 10th game away from home. The Roadrunners have lost five of their last six overall.
Texas Tech led 31-27 at halftime but went scoreless for a four-minute stretch early in the second half to fall behind 39-36 with 15:12 remaining.
That’s when Tolbert and Ty Nurse took over, combining for 11 points during a 14-3 spurt that put the Red Raiders on top 50-42 on Tolbert’s jumper with 11:56 left.
Texas Tech’s lead swelled to double digits for the first time when Terran Petteway’s 3-pointer made it 60-50 with just over seven minutes to go.
Texas Tech closes its non-conference schedule at home against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday before opening Big 12 play at Oklahoma State on Jan. 4.
