Florida State nearly blew a 16-point lead Saturday, and its 63-56 victory at home over Virginia could prove costly.

The Seminoles (18-7, 8-3 ACC) lost leading scorer and rebounder Chris Singleton when he broke his right foot midway through the first half that will require surgery.

Michael Snaer led Florida State with 16 points. Singleton scored 11 in 10 minutes, and Bernard James blocked five shots.

Florida State, which has won seven of its past nine, pushed the lead to 53-37 on Snaer’s 3-pointer with 9:48 left. Virginia used a 14-2 run to draw within 55-51 with 3:10 remaining on back-to-back 3-pointers by Sammy Zeglinski.

Joe Harris’ short jumper with 1:12 left cut the Florida State lead to 56-53, but James scored on the ensuing possession with 37 seconds remaining.

Zeglinski scored 19 points to lead Virginia (12-12, 3-7), which led 19-15 on Akil Mitchell’s dunk with 9:46 left in the first half. The Seminoles closed the half on a 19-4 run, building a 34-23 halftime advantage. Deividas Dulkys hit two 3-pointers to spark the run.

The victory keeps Florida State one-half game behind North Carolina for second place in the ACC, and 1 ½ games behind first-place Duke. The Seminoles, who came into the game leading the nation in field-goal percentage defense at 36.0 percent, held Virginia to 31.7 percent shooting.

The Cavaliers have lost seven of their past nine.
