Bulls 102, Pistons 91: Pau Gasol collected 17 points and 15 rebounds and Joakim Noah racked up 13 points, 14 boards and six assists as host Chicago held off Detroit.
Derrick Rose returned after missing two straight games and four of the last five with two sprained ankles and put up 24 points to go with seven assists for the Bulls, who had all of their projected starters going into the season in the lineup for the first time. Jimmy Butler scored 19 and Aaron Brooks added 10 off the bench.
Josh Smith finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pistons, who dropped both ends of a back-to-back that began Sunday against Utah. Greg Monroe collected 16 points and 10 rebounds, Brandon Jennings had 11 points and eight assists and D.J. Augustin scored 16 off the bench for Detroit.
Detroit wiped out most of a 19-point deficit in a big third quarter, as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored nine points in the period and Smith had eight to help the Pistons trim the margin to 78-70 entering the fourth. Detroit kept chipping away throughout the fourth and got within 90-88 on Augustin's jumper with 2:43 left, but Gasol answered with a jumper at the other end and Butler knocked down a 3-pointer as Chicago closed it out.
The Bulls never trailed and the only tie was a 4-4 deadlock in the opening minutes that Rose snapped with a 3-pointer. Caron Butler's three-point play pulled Detroit within three early in the second quarter, but Chicago reeled off a 15-2 run and took a 60-44 lead into halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Drummond's name was misspelled "Drummund" on the back of the jersey he wore for most of the first half before changing into one with the correct spelling. … Chicago has had at least five players score in double figures in every game this season. … The Bulls have won 22 of the past 24 meetings dating to 2009.
