Austin Gomber struck out a career-high eight and pitched into the ninth inning for the first time as a big-leaguer Monday night as the Colorado Rockies earned a rare road win, beating the undermanned New York Mets 3-2.
Ryan McMahon and Elias Diaz homered in the second inning and Garrett Hampson delivered an RBI triple in the fourth for the Rockies, who have won four straight overall. Colorado, which lost its previous seven road games by a combined 36-13, improved to 3-17 away from Coors Field this season.
The loss was the third straight for the Mets, who have 16 players on the injured list. New York's fourth-string center fielder, Johneshwy Fargas, exited after sustaining a left AC joint injury crashing into the wall in pursuit of Hampson's triple.
Gomber (3-4), who threw as many as seven innings just once in his previous 24 major league starts, allowed four hits and walked none Monday.
Gomber faced the minimum number of batters until James McCann -- a catcher playing first base for the first time as a professional -- homered with two outs in the seventh.
The left-hander retired the next four batters before pinch hitter Brandon Drury led off the ninth inning with a homer. Patrick Mazeika then chased Gomber with a pinch-hit single, but Carlos Estevez earned his second save by striking out Jonathan Villar, retiring Francisco Lindor on a fly to deep left and striking out McCann.
David Peterson (1-4) took the loss for the Mets after giving up all three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings.
McCann, who only began taking grounders at first base over the weekend, was tested on the first ball hit to him in the second, when he made a diving stop to rob Josh Fuentes of a hit and hit his face on the ground before throwing to Peterson in time to nab Fuentes.
In the fifth, McCann completed a pickoff of Trevor Story by taking the throw from Peterson and firing to shortstop Lindor covering second.
