Rookie Michael Chavis drove in a career-high three runs as the host Boston Red Sox overcame an early four-run deficit to post a 9-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Monday.
Xander Bogaerts belted a two-run double, J.D. Martinez drove in a pair of runs, and Mookie Betts had an RBI single among his three hits for the Red Sox, who benefited from a six-run third inning.
Jurickson Profar ripped a two-run single and Matt Chapman and Josh Phegley each drove in a run for the Athletics, who have lost the first four contests of their nine-game road trip.
After Oakland erupted for four runs in the second, Boston was aided by errors from second baseman Profar and starting pitcher Frankie Montas (4-2) to put the wheels in motion on its own big inning.
Betts and Martinez each slapped an RBI single to right field before Bogaerts launched a fly ball that was misjudged by center fielder Ramon Laureano, who saw it sail over his head to allow two runs to score and tie the game.
Chavis' single to center plated Martinez and Bogaerts to cap the six-run uprising in the third before his bloop single in the fifth extended Boston's lead to 7-4. The 23-year-old entered the game with five RBIs in his first eight contests.
Jackie Bradley Jr. tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning with an RBI single to center to plate Rafael Devers, who scored twice on the night.
Six Boston relievers combined to allow one hit over 4 1/3 innings to seal the win as the Red Sox improved to 3-4 on their homestand. Ryan Brasier (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 perfect innings and was credited with the win.
Oakland loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Hector Velazquez, but Matt Barnes entered to record the last two outs and earn his second save.
Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez ran into trouble in the second inning after walking the first two batters despite getting ahead with an 0-2 count on each. After a forceout, Profar made him pay with a two-run single to left field.
Profar advanced to second after a wild pitch before coming around to score on Phegley's single to left. Chapman followed two batters later with an RBI double off the wall in right field to give Oakland a 4-0 lead.
