Left-handed starter Joey Lucchesi and two relievers ran the Padres' scoreless innings streak to 17 to start the season, and second baseman Ian Kinsler hit his first home run as the host Padres survived a late scare to defeat San Francisco 4-1 on Friday night.
The 17 scoreless innings were a Padres' record to open a season. The record over the franchise's first 50 seasons was 14 straight scoreless innings to open the 2008 season.
The bid for a second straight shutout ended when Evan Longoria opened the top of the ninth with a home run into the left field seats off right-handed reliever Phil Maton.
The Giants then loaded the bases with one out against Padres closer Kirby Yates and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. But Yates threw a 2-and-2 pitch past Gerardo Parra for a called third strike, and then struck out Brandon Belt looking to pick up his second save in as many games.
The win marked the first time since 2011 that the Padres opened the season with two straight wins.
Lucchesi allowed three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Right-hander Robert Stock followed and retired all five Giants he faced. Right-hander Trey Wingenter allowed a two-out double to Buster Posey in the eighth.
The Padres scored three runs in four innings against Giants left-handed starter Derek Holland.
Eric Hosmer drew a walk to open the second and moved to third when 20-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr. lined a double over the head of Giants center fielder Steven Duggar. Manuel Margot then grounded a two-run single to right.
Kinsler opened the third with his first homer as a Padre, a drive into the left-field stands.
Wil Myers doubled in the fifth off Trevor Gott and scored on Manny Machado's line single to left. It was the third baseman's first hit as a Padre after going hitless in his first five at-bats with four strikeouts and a double-play grounder.
The Giants got six hits Friday night and a total of 11 hits over 18 innings.
