Corey Kluber threw a three-hit shutout to lead the host Cleveland Indians to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night at Progressive Field.
It was Kluber's second complete game of the season and his first shutout, and he finished strong by retiring the final 10 batters he faced. He struck out seven and walked one while making 98 pitches, and improved to 14-6, tied for the American League lead in victories.
Leonys Martin's solo homer in the sixth inning broke a scoreless tie, one of only four Indians hits. Michael Brantley had an RBI single in the frame, as well.
Angels starter Felix Pena matched Kluber zero for zero through five innings. Though he walked the first two batters of the game and another batter in the fourth, he didn't allow a hit through five innings.
But Pena fell behind in the count to Martin to begin the sixth, and on a 3-1 count, Martin got ahold of a 92-mph fastball and hit it into the seats in right field for his 11th homer of the season.
Francisco Lindor followed with a double, then scored on a single by Brantley to increase Cleveland's lead to 2-0. Pena retired the next hitter but Angels manager Mike Scioscia decided Pena was done for the night.
Pena gave up the two runs on three hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out one.
The Angels were without center fielder Mike Trout for the third game in a row because of a contusion of his right wrist, and the Angels offense suffered. Eric Young Jr., starting in center in place of Trout, had the club's only extra-base hit off Kluber, with a double in the third inning. Only one other Angels baserunner got as far as second base in the game, and no Angel reached third.
The Indians increased their lead to 3-0 in the seventh inning after Melky Cabrera led off with a walk. Pinch runner Brandon Guyer took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball by catcher Francisco Arcia.
