Cardinals 2, Giants 0: Adam Wainwright dominated through 7 2/3 innings as visiting St. Louis evened the series with San Francisco at a game apiece.
Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the third inning and rookie Oscar Taveras doubled for the Cardinals, who snapped a three-game slide. Wainwright (11-4) was on the losing end of a 1-0 final in his last start but scattered four hits and a pair of walks to keep the Giants off the board and match the major-league lead in wins.
Ryan Vogelsong (5-5) was the tough-luck loser, surrendering two runs on six hits while striking out eight in seven frames. Joe Panik delivered two hits off Wainwright as San Francisco lost for the 16th time in the last 21 games.
Vogelsong faced the minimum through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third when Taveras led off with a double and moved up on Mark Ellis’ single. Vogelsong struck out Wainwright but Carpenter sent a single up the middle and Holliday poked a slider through the right side to make it 2-0.
Wainwright kept the ball on the ground and did not run into trouble until Panik and Hector Sanchez hit back-to-back singles with two out in the eighth. Pat Neshek came on to get the final out of the eighth and Trevor Rosenthal worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 25th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants CF Angel Pagan will receive an epidural injection Thursday in an effort to ease his back pain. … San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt (thumb) is expected to be activated from the DL on Friday. … The Cardinals failed to score more than three runs for the sixth straight game.
