Mariners 7, Rangers 5: Kendrys Morales had two of Seattle’s four home runs as the Mariners blasted past host Texas.
Mike Zunino added a solo shot and Brad Miller hit a two-run homer for Seattle, which moved a half-game ahead of Detroit for the second American League wild-card spot. Hisashi Iwakuma (14-6) battled through 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on seven hits, and Fernando Rodney yielded a run in the ninth but earned his 42nd save.
Adam Rosales homered and Rougned Odor added two hits and an RBI as the Rangers dropped their seventh straight game. Scott Baker (3-4) suffered the brunt of the damage, surrendering five runs on four hits - three home runs - in 4 1/3 innings for Texas, which got the news earlier in the day that manager Ron Washington had resigned.
Morales got it started in the second inning when he came up with a runner on first and sent a 2-2 sinker 10 rows deep in the right-field bleachers. The Rangers got a run back in the fourth but the Mariners powered up again in the fifth as Zunino sent a blast into the Texas bullpen in right-center before Miller ended Baker’s night with a two-run blast to make it 5-1.
Morales got a hanging slider from Shawn Tolleson in the sixth and sent it out down the line in right to push the lead to 7-2. Rosales got those two runs back with a shot to left, and Leonys Martin scored on a wild pitch in the ninth before Rodney closed it out.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mariners OF Endy Chavez left the game in the top of the fifth inning after suffering a gash on the forehead while sliding. … Zunino’s blast was his 20th of the season - the most ever by a Seattle catcher. … Washington, who cited personal reasons for his resignation, was replaced on an interim basis by bench coach Tim Bogar.
