Pirates 4, Cardinals 3: Pedro Alvarez singled in the go-ahead run and Josh Harrison had two hits as Pittsburgh edged visiting St. Louis.
Harrison, Jose Tabata and Edinson Volquez each drove in a run for the Pirates, who have won four straight. Jared Hughes (2-1) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief in support of Volquez, who allowed three runs on four hits and four walks in 4 2/3 frames.
Mark Ellis recorded an RBI and scored as the Cardinals fell for the seventh time in 11 games. Lance Lynn (4-2) was knocked around for four runs - all in the fourth inning - and nine hits in six frames to suffer the loss for St. Louis.
The Cardinals took advantage of Volquez’s inability to throw strikes in the second as they pushed across three runs on two singles, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, a double-play grounder and a wild pitch. Ellis singled in the first run and capped the rally by racing in from third on the wild pitch.
The Pirates chipped away for four runs in the fourth as they loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch before two RBI groundouts and Harrison’s infield single tied it. Alvarez’s single to center plated Harrison to give Pittsburgh the lead and Hughes got out of Volquez’s jam in the fifth to kick off a strong performance by the bullpen, capped by Mark Melancon’s fourth save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh RF Starling Marte left the game in the third inning with a back injury. … Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen (undisclosed injury) did not start and could not come in for Marte, pushing 1B Gaby Sanchez into right field for his first career outfield appearance while Tabata took over in center. … Cardinals 1B Matt Adams belted a deep drive out of the stadium down the right-field line in the third, but it was ruled foul and replay confirmed the call.
