Angels 7, Rays 5: Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as visiting Los Angeles built a big lead early and held on to win the rubber match of the three-game series.
Jered Weaver (12-6) allowed two runs on six hits and four walks over six innings to run his unbeaten streak to nine starts and Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 30th save — his sixth since joining the Angels. Josh Hamilton, Howie Kendrick and Efren Navarro each had two hits and an RBI for Los Angeles, which pulled within one game of American League West-leading Oakland and padded its comfortable lead atop the AL wild card standings.
Rays starter Jake Odorizzi (7-9) was tagged for five runs and eight hits in three innings — his shortest outing of the season — to snap a three-start winning streak. James Loney had three hits and two RBIs to pace Tampa Bay, and Ben Zobrist went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Odorizzi needed a career-high 46 pitches to get through the first as the first six batters reached and the Angels batted around. Trout doubled in a run and scored on Hamilton's single before Kendrick drove in a run with a single, David Freese added a sacrifice fly and Navarro capped the outburst with an RBI double.
The Rays chipped away with sacrifice flies from Jose Molina in the fourth and Loney in the fifth before Trout's RBI single and Freese's second sacrifice fly of the day stretched the margin back to five runs. Tampa Bay rallied for three runs in the seventh as Loney singled in a run, Evan Longoria scored on a wild pitch and Cole Figueroa drew a bases-loaded walk, but the Rays left the bases loaded and then mustered only one baserunner over the final two frames.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The game was delayed for 19 minutes in the top of the third when a thunderstorm knocked out power to some of the stadium's lights. … Loney has reached base in 22 consecutive games. … Longoria recorded his first career sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning, setting up the Rays' second run.
