Royals 6, Rangers 3: Alex Gordon homered and Jarrod Dyson drove in three runs in support of Jeremy Guthrie as visiting Kansas City clinched a series win over Texas.
Dyson drew a bases-loaded walk to score the go-ahead run in a three-run fifth and Omar Infante singled in a pair for the Royals, who are three games clear of the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. Guthrie (10-10) allowed one run and five hits in eight innings to move to 5-1 in his last six starts.
Nick Tepesch (4-8) was reached for six runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings as the Rangers fell for the seventh time in the last nine games. Shin-Soo Choo homered and Leonys Martin drove in two runs in the ninth for Texas.
Gordon put Kansas City on top with a towering shot to right in the first but Choo responded in the bottom half by taking Guthrie’s first pitch to the opposite field for a solo blast. Tepesch lost control in the fourth inning, loading the bases on two walks and a hit before walking Dyson on four pitches to force in the go-ahead run.
Infante followed with a single to left-center to plate two and Dyson extended the gap to 6-1 with a two-run single to center in the seventh. Aaron Crow came on for Guthrie in the ninth and surrendered Martin’s single before getting J.P. Arencibia to fly out and end the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rangers LHP Derek Holland, who has missed the entire season recovering from knee surgery, was scratched from his scheduled rehab start on Sunday due to back spasms. … Texas traded C Chris Gimenez to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for future considerations. … Kansas City C Salvador Perez, who missed time this week with leg trouble, was given a scheduled night off.
