Royals 3, Twins 2: Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas each had a run-scoring double in the sixth inning as host Kansas City slipped past Minnesota.
Omar Infante went 3-for-3 with a walk and Gordon also had three hits as the Royals won for the sixth time in eight games. Kansas City remained 3 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League’s second wild-card spot.
Jason Frasor (2-1) struck out Chris Colabello with the bases loaded in the sixth and Greg Holland worked around a one-out walk and two wild pitches to strike out two in the ninth and record his 28th save for Kansas City. Josh Willingham homered in the second inning for the Twins, who are 4-8 since the All-Star break.
Kansas City trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth before Infante led off the inning with a single against Phil Hughes (10-8) and scored on Perez’s one-out double to left-center field. Gordon followed with a booming two-bagger to center to put the Royals ahead and scored on a two-out double to right by Moustakas.
The Twins pulled within 3-2 on Danny Santana’s RBI single in the seventh. Hughes allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings while losing his third straight start.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kansas City starter Danny Duffy allowed one run, four hits and six walks in 5 2/3 innings. … Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia returned to the team after missing Tuesday’s contest due to the birth of his son and struck out as a pinch hitter in the eighth. … Royals reliever Wade Davis worked a perfect eighth and has not been scored upon in 32 of his last 33 appearances, allowing one run during the stretch.
