Angels 5, Dodgers 0: Garrett Richards tossed a five-hitter for his first career shutout to lead the visiting Angels to a win in the first of four straight Freeway Series games.
Mike Trout and Albert Pujols had RBI doubles during a four-run first inning for the Angels, who have won 16 of the last 23 meetings to remain one game back of first-place Oakland in the AL West. Josh Hamilton chipped in a solo homer, his third blast in a seven-game span after a 20-game homerless drought.
Richards (12-4), who gave up eight runs in 13 innings while losing his previous two starts, let up just five singles and two walks while striking out nine and lowering his ERA to 1.91 in 13 road starts. The right-hander retired 16 of the last 19 men he faced to easily outduel Zack Greinke (12-7), who gave up five runs - three earned - in seven frames while falling to 1-5 in his career versus the Angels.
Kole Calhoun singled on Greinke's second pitch of the night before Trout lined a shot to left that got past Carl Crawford and rolled toward the wall to allow the first run to score. Pujols brought in Trout with a shot to the left-center field gap and the first of two throwing errors in the game by shortstop Hanley Ramirez helped the Angels complete the four-run outburst.
Josh Hamilton slugged a solo shot leading off the sixth and Richards retired nine in a row before a two-out single in the seventh. The right-hander, who threw a career-high 122 pitches, improved to 3-0 with a 0.80 ERA in interleague play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Angels activated RF Collin Cowgill (nose) from the 15-day disabled list and placed RHP Mike Morin (foot) on the DL, while the Dodgers placed RHP Chris Perez (ankle) on the DL and selected the contract of RHP Carlos Frias from Triple-A Albuquerque. ... Pujols' first-inning double was the 550th of his career, moving him into 25th place on the all-time list. ... Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw was named NL Pitcher of the Month for the second straight time and the fourth time in his career after going 4-0 with a 1.07 ERA in July. Kershaw starts Tuesday opposite Angels LHP Hector Santiago.
