Cubs 5, Marlins 2: Junior Lake homered twice and Jeff Samardzija tossed seven solid innings as host Chicago extended its longest winning streak of the season to five games.
Emilio Bonifacio slugged a two-run homer and Anthony Rizzo reached three times for the Cubs, who have won eight of their last nine at home. Starlin Castro registered two doubles and scored a run as Chicago recorded 11 hits - seven for extra bases.
Samardzija (2-5) yielded two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts to bounce back from a rough outing at Milwaukee and emerge victorious for the second time in three starts following a 16-game winless streak. Counterpart Randy Wolf (1-2) was reached for four runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 frames as Miami dropped its second straight following four consecutive wins over Tampa Bay.
Christian Yelich gave the Marlins the lead with a solo shot into the center-field bleachers in the third. Bonifacio followed Samardzija's base hit with a 3-2 blast to left in the home half and Lake made it 3-1 in the fifth with his seventh of the year.
Giancarlo Stanton doubled and scored in the Marlins' sixth, but Chicago had another quick answer when Castro doubled and came in on Wolf's wild pitch. Samardzija retired the side in the seventh on seven pitches and two others bridged the gap to Pedro Strop, who worked a perfect ninth for his second save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago tied the overall series 84-84 and took a 45-44 lead in games played at Wrigley Field. ... Samardzija picked up his first home win since Aug. 19 versus Washington. ... Rizzo has two homers and two doubles in his last three games.
