Angels 7, White Sox 5: Kole Calhoun homered and Howie Kendrick drove in a pair as visiting Los Angeles earned a doubleheader sweep of Chicago.
Grant Green drove in a run and scored while C.J. Cron and Hank Conger each added an RBI for the Angels, who have won nine of 11. Jered Weaver (9-6) matched a season high with five earned runs allowed on nine hits but struck out six in 5 2/3 innings and got some help from the offense to pick up the win.
Conor Gillaspie hit his first home run of the season and Dayan Viciedo added a two-run blast for the White Sox, who dropped the opener 8-4. Scott Carroll (2-5) started for Chicago and was ripped for seven runs on 10 hits in six innings.
Los Angeles began the second inning with four straight singles, capped by run-scoring hits from Kendrick and Cron, and Green added an RBI groundout later in the frame to cap the three-run rally. The White Sox crawled back within a run in the bottom half when Gillaspie came up with a runner on and sent a two-run shot out to right.
The Angels got two more in the fifth on Calhoun’s blast to right and made it a 6-2 gap in the sixth when Conger’s two-out single scored Kendrick from second. Weaver faltered in the sixth, yielding an RBI single to Gillaspie and Viciedo’s two-run blast to left before being removed, but Kendrick drew a bases-loaded walk to added a run in the seventh and Joe Smith worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the day and ninth of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Angels LHP Rich Hill, who was acquired for $1 from the Boston Red Sox organization earlier in the day, worked in both ends of the doubleheader and issued a total of three walks and one hit without recording an out. … Los Angeles CF Mike Trout went 2-for-4 and has hit in nine straight to raise his average to .315. … Carroll has been knocked around for 12 runs and 19 hits in 11 innings over his last two starts.
