Red Sox 10, Yankees 4: Daniel Nava had three hits and three RBIs while Yoenis Cespedes drove in a pair as Boston ripped Masahiro Tanaka and visiting New York.
Rusney Castillo went 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored while Xander Bogaerts doubled among two hits while scoring twice for the Red Sox, who put up eight runs in the second inning and cruised the rest of the way. Joe Kelly (6-4) allowed four runs and nine hits in a career-high 7 1/3 innings to pick up the win.
Tanaka (13-5) – making his second start since taking 2 1/2 months off due to a tear in his elbow ligament – was knocked around for seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks in 1 2/3 innings. Derek Jeter served as designated hitter and went 1-for-2 in his second-to-last game for the Yankees.
Cespedes singled in a run in the first and reached 100 RBIs on the season when his single to center in the second plated Bogaerts to make it 5-0 and ended Tanaka’s afternoon. Preston Claiborne came on in relief and two more runs scored on an error in center field before Garin Cecchini doubled in a run and Castillo capped the eight-run outburst with an RBI single.
Boston sent 14 batters to the plate in the second inning but Bryan Mitchell came on and settled things down for New York, allowing only Nava’s RBI single in the sixth in his four innings of relief. The Yankees were down 10-1 before chasing Kelly with a three-run rally in the eighth, but Rubby De La Rosa came on and retired the next two to end the threat.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jeter was playing in a game in which his team had been eliminated from postseason contention for just the third time in his career. … The Red Sox, who are expected to honor Jeter before Sunday’s finale, took Saturday to honor outgoing commissioner Bud Selig in a pregame ceremony. … The Yankees have shut down RHP Dellin Betances due to workload concerns.
