Padres 9, Marlins 2: Logan Forsythe belted a two-run homer among his three hits and Will Venable had three RBI singles as San Diego breezed to victory in the opener of its 10-game road trip.
Yasmani Grandal and Alexi Amarista added run-scoring singles and Edinson Volquez tossed six solid innings for the Padres, who have outscored the Marlins 20-3 en route to winning all four meetings this season.
After Venable's first RBI single forged a 1-1 tie in the second inning, Forsythe gave San Diego some breathing room in the third. Forsythe jumped on 1-2 breaking ball from Ricky Nolasco (4-8) and deposited it into the first row of bleachers above the bullpen in left-center field for his third homer.
Giancarlo Stanton's RBI double in the bottom of the frame trimmed the deficit, but the Padres pulled away with a three-run sixth. Chase Headley singled to open the inning and moved to third on Kyle Blanks' double. Grandal's soft single to left plated Headley before Venable chased Nolasco with a line-drive RBI single to give San Diego a 5-2 lead.
The offense was more than enough for Volquez (6-6), who improved to 5-0 lifetime versus the Marlins. The 29-year-old Dominican recorded his 50th career victory after yielding two runs on seven hits while striking out eight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Forsythe, who went 3-for-4, is 5-for-9 with three RBIs and three runs scored in his last two games. He went 0-for-10 in his previous two contests. Forsythe may see additional playing time as promising rookie 2B Jedd Gyorko experienced tightness in his strained right groin muscle during the first of two rehab games with Double-A San Antonio. ... The subject of trade rumors, Nolasco yielded six runs on 11 hits in five innings to take the loss. ... Prior to the game, San Diego recalled RHP Burch Smith from Triple-A Tucson to add another arm to the bullpen. Smith allowed just one hit in the final two innings to seal the win.
