Yankees 5, Astros 1 (14): Mark Reynolds homered to lead off the top of the 14th inning as visiting New York handed Houston its 15th straight loss to end the season.

Reynolds blasted a 1-1 pitch from Lucas Harrell (6-17) out to left-center while Eduardo Nunez added a two-run double and J.R. Murphy an RBI single to make a winner out of Matt Daley (1-0), who struck out two in two innings. David Robertson, who will likely take over the closer's role from Mariano Rivera, pitched a perfect 14th.

David Huff yielded one run and three hits while striking out seven in five innings for the Yankees (85-77), who won't participate in the postseason for only the second time since 1995. Curtis Granderson delivered a game-tying RBI single in the eighth.

Erik Bedard struck out nine and allowed three hits in seven shutout innings for the Astros (51-111), who recorded the worst season in club history and will host the Yankees to begin the 2014 season April 1-3. Harrell pitched 4 2/3 innings while Matt Dominguez drove in the run.

Rivera, the all-time saves leader with 652, did not compete amid speculation he would play center field in his final game. Rivera was the last player to wear No. 42 since Major League Baseball retired the number in 1997 to honor Jackie Robinson.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The game featured 35 strikeouts - 19 by Yankees pitchers. When J.D. Martinez went down swinging to end the ninth inning, the Astros set a single-season record with 1,535, breaking the mark of 1,529 set by Arizona in 2010. ... The Astros' 111 losses are the most since the Diamondbacks dropped 111 in 2004 and they are the third team since 1970 to lose 110 contests (Detroit 119 in 2003). ... New York has recorded 21 consecutive winning seasons - second-best in major-league history behind their run of 39 straight seasons from 1926-64 - but suffered its first losing season away from home (39-42) since 1995.
