Josh Reddick scored on Josh Donaldson’s two-out triple in the eighth inning and Oakland continued its dominance over visiting Houston.

Carlos Pena tied the score in the top half of the inning with a solo homer off Sean Doolittle (1-0) before Oakland responded for its fifth straight win over Houston this season. The Athletics are off to their best start since 1990 at 11-4, and they've outscored the Astros 38-14.

Rhiner Cruz (0-1) walked Reddick with two outs in the eighth before Donaldson followed with a triple down the right-field line. Grant Balfour worked a perfect ninth inning for his second save.

Houston took a 2-0 lead in the third on run-scoring singles by Jason Maxwell and Chris Carter off A.J. Griffin, who turned in his third straight quality start by allowing two runs with eight strikeouts over six innings.

Eric Sogard had three hits for the Athletics, who hit three triples in a game for the first time since Aug. 3, 2002. Houston has lost four straight games since winning three in a row.
