Angels 5, Astros 4: Albert Pujols delivered a walk-off two-run double to end a five-game losing streak for host Los Angeles.
Pujols grounded a two-out fastball from Jose Veras (0-1) down the third-base line to score Luis Jimenez from second and Mike Trout from first for his 15th career walk-off hit. Pujols, Trout, Jimenez, Chris Iannetta and Mark Trumbo had two hits each for the Angels.
Chris Carter blasted a two-run home run for the Astros to give them an early 2-0 lead. Astros starting pitcher Lucas Harrell worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run and six hits.
Angels relief pitcher Michael Roth (1-0), who was recalled from Double-A Arkansas before the game to replace injured reliever Kevin Jepsen, made his major-league debut and struck out four while working perfect eighth and ninth innings. Jepsen was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game with a triceps injury.
Angels starter Garrett Richards retired the first nine batters he faced before Jose Altuve led off the fourth with a walk. Two outs later, Carter homered to right-center. Richards, the first starting pitcher for the Angels to make it into the seventh inning this season, allowed three hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Heading into the game, Carter was the only player on Houston who had faced Richards, striking out in his only at-bat with the Oakland Athletics. Carter went 2-for-4 to improve to 10-for-19 in the last four games with four home runs. … Prior to the game, the Angels also placed SS Erick Aybar on the 15-day disabled list with a heel injury and recalled OF J.B. Shuck, who batted leadoff in Saturday’s game and went 1-for-4 with a walk. …. Angels OF Josh Hamilton hit his first home run with the Angels, a solo shot in the sixth that cut the deficit to 2-1.
