Cardinals 3, Rockies 0: Shelby Miller racked up a career-high 13 strikeouts in a one-hitter as host St. Louis claimed the opener of a three-game series with slumping Colorado.
Eric Young Jr. led off the game with a bloop single before Miller (5-2) sat down 27 straight for the Cardinals, who have won eight of their last nine. The Rockies have lost 12 of their last 18 games after a franchise-best 13-4 start.
St. Louis staked Miller to an early lead on Pete Kozma's RBI single in the second, and Carlos Beltran added a solo homer - his ninth - in the third. Jon Jay capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Miller's gem spoiled a decent outing by Rockies starter Jon Garland (3-3), who allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings to drop to 1-6 all-time against St. Louis.
Miller struck out the side in the fourth and recorded two strikeouts in four frames. Seven of his 13 strikeouts were looking. Troy Tulowitzki struck out three times and Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler each went down on strikes twice.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miller is the first Cardinals rookie with at least 11 strikeouts in a game since Rick Ankiel on Sept. 13, 2000. Ankiel had four 11-strikeout games as a rookie. … Rockies rookie 3B Nolan Arenado went 0-for-3 and is hitless in his last 14 at-bats. … Cardinals C Yadier Molina went 2-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest by a St. Louis player this season.
