Yankees 3, Rockies 1: Robinson Cano homered and Vernon Wells singled in a run as visiting New York fought through the rain drops to take the rubber game from Colorado.
Chris Stewart added a sacrifice fly and former Rockie Chris Nelson doubled and scored for the Yankees, who sat through a one-hour, 59-minute rain delay following the fourth inning. CC Sabathia allowed one run through the first four innings and Adam Warren (1-0) grabbed the win with 1 2/3 hitless innings of relief after the delay.
Carlos Gonzalez drove in the lone run with a sacrifice fly and Jeff Francis (1-3) surrendered two runs and four hits in four innings to absorb the loss for the Rockies.
New York jumped on top on Wells’ two-out single to right-center in the first inning but Colorado got the run back in the bottom of the frame when Dexter Fowler came in on Gonzalez’s fly. Nelson, who was designated for assignment by the Rockies late last month, led off the fourth with a double and came in on Stewart’s fly to give New York the lead heading into the delay.
Cano picked up his 1,500th career hit with an infield single in the third and made it 1,501 in the fifth by driving a 2-0 slider from Adam Ottavino out to right. Mariano Rivera worked a scoreless ninth for his 13th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees SS Eduardo Nunez (ribcage) missed his third straight game and remains day-to-day. … The Rockies dropped to 6-11 since their 13-4 start. They open a six-game road trip at NL-best St. Louis on Friday. … Wells has gone 5-for-8 in the last two games after struggling to 3-for-23 in the previous six.
