Tigers 7, Rangers 2: Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter each had two hits and scored twice as host Detroit mounted all of its offense over the first two innings to cruise past Texas.
Jhonny Peralta and Victor Martinez drove in two runs apiece to support Doug Fister (7-5), who rebounded from back-to-back rough outings for his first win since June 16. The right-hander permitted two runs and eight hits over six frames while Bruce Rondon, Drew Smyly and Joaquin Benoit closed it out with three scoreless innings.
Justin Grimm (7-7) failed to last more than four innings for the third straight start, giving up seven runs and 10 hits before leaving the game in the bottom of the fourth due to forearm soreness. A.J. Pierzynski homered and had three hits while Jurickson Profar added two hits and drove home the Rangers’ other run.
The Tigers blitzed Grimm over the first two innings, getting consecutive doubles from Jackson and Hunter to open the bottom of the first. Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk three batters later, Peralta followed with a two-run double and Alex Avila capped the five-run frame with an RBI single.
Detroit tacked on two more runs in the second with a sacrifice fly from Miguel Cabrera and Martinez's run-scoring double. Texas answered in the fourth with a solo shot from Pierzynski and an RBI single by Profar.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Martinez finished 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games – a stretch during which he is batting .446. … Relievers Joe Ortiz and Wilmer Font held Detroit to one hit over 4 2/3 innings after Grimm’s departure. Texas relievers have yielded one run over their last 19 1/3 innings. … Grimm was attempting to become only the fourth Rangers rookie to reach the eight-win mark before the All-Star break.
