Angels 10, Tigers 0: Mike Trout’s first career grand slam highlighted a nine-run first inning and host Los Angeles cruised to its second straight win in the series.
Peter Bourjos had his second consecutive three-hit game and an RBI and Howie Kendrick drove in two runs for the Angels. Garrett Richards (1-0) took advantage of the early run support to sail through seven innings, allowing two hits and matching his career high with eight strikeouts.
Tigers starter Rick Porcello (0-2) didn’t make it out of the first inning, becoming the first modern-day starting pitcher to allow at least nine earned runs and nine hits in less than an inning. His ERA ballooned from 5.11 to 11.08.
Bourjos led off the first with the first of his three infield singles. The Angels followed with RBI singles from Albert Pujols and Mark Trumbo, a two-run single by Kendrick and another RBI single by Brendan Harris before Trout finished Porcello’s day with his blast to center.
The Tigers put their leadoff batter on base in the second, seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Detroit, which came into the game leading the American League in hitting (.285), is batting .179 over its last four games with three runs scored.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Angels had not scored more than eight runs in a game this season before scoring nine in the first inning. Combined with the five runs they scored in the eighth inning of Friday’s win, the Angels produced 14 in back-to-back innings. … Los Angeles entered Saturday hitting.279 – the second-highest mark in the American League. … Richards, who moved into the starting rotation after an injury to Jered Weaver’s non-throwing elbow, earned his first victory as a starter since throwing seven shutout innings at Detroit in July.
