Marlins 2, Reds 1: Justin Ruggiano hit the tiebreaking solo homer off Aroldis Chapman in the top of the ninth as visiting Miami downed Cincinnati.
Chapman (2-1) retired Chris Valaika on a grounder to start the ninth, but Ruggiano drilled a 3-1 changeup from the hard-throwing left-hander into the seats in left-center. Mike Dunn (1-0) struck out both batters he faced in the eighth and Steve Cishek worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his first save.
Ruggiano – who has three of Miami’s five home runs – went deep for the second time in as many games. Nick Green tied a career high with three hits for Miami.
Shin-Soo Choo led off the first with a triple and scored on Joey Votto’s sacrifice fly. Miami answered in the third as Placido Polanco’s two-out RBI single brought home Green to tie the game, but right fielder Jay Bruce limited the damage when he threw out Donovan Solano at the plate.
Each starter allowed one run as Cincinnati’s Mat Latos struck out 10 over seven frames while Miami’s Kevin Slowey held a surging Reds' offense that scored 22 runs over its previous two games to four hits over six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami provided Slowey with his first run support Friday in his fourth start. The Marlins were shut out in his first two outings and scored a run Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies after he left the game. … The Marlins became the last team in the majors to record a save. … The Reds saw their five-game home winning streak snapped and lost for only the third time in 11 home games.
